Free King James Version Bible

The complete Free Bible Version (Old and New Testaments) is now available as 3.1 beta. See the links below to the individual books in PDF format. Since it has also been placed in the United Bible Societies' Digital Bible Library it is now available on apps such as YouVersion and websites such as bible.com and ebible.org

The KJV Old Testament was translated from the Masoretic Hebrew text, and the Apocrypha was translated from the Greek Septuagint. Several versions of the King James Bible (KJV) were produced in 1611,1629, 1638, 1762, and 1769. The 1769 edition is most commonly cited as the King James Version (KJV). The King James Version Bible (KJV) was authorized by King James I and is sometimes referred to as the “Authorized Version”. It was translated by the Church of England and was first published in 1611. The KJV New Testament was translated from the Textus Receptus. However, the majority of the book of Revelation seems to have been translated from the Latin Vulgate.

Go to either the App Store or Google Play and download the app, and then select the FBV as one of your Bibles.

The Free Bible Version NT is a new translation into modern English from the standard Greek text. Its intent is to be as faithful to the original meaning without being awkward or misleading. The style is contemporary English without using slang or colloquialisms, speaking to our modern society in a way people will understand.
This is an ongoing project that expects change and development. If you come across any glitches that need to be fixed, please let us know! You are encouraged to copy and share this resource, subject to the limitations of the license (see above).

Free

Finally, a truly free Bible—free in terms of availability, free in terms of use, and free in terms of cost for download from the Internet. What does this mean?
The Free Bible Version is freely available. This means it can be viewed online, re-posted on other websites, and printed. It is free for use not only in the sense it doesn’t cost anything to use, but that the whole of the Free Bible Version can be used without any restrictions as to quantity and books.
This contrasts with almost all other modern English language translations available today. Most people (including church leaders) are not aware that modern copyrighted English versions limit the amount of text you can use. This is often set at a specific number of verses, and also that no complete single book of the New Testament can be copied. Technically this would mean that you could not copy out the book of Philemon say for your Bible study class, even though it only comprises 25 verses.
A brief review of modern English versions reveals that the maximum number of verses that can be reproduced is usually between 250 and 500 in total. Limits are invariably placed on how much of a Biblical book can be published, such as up to 50%. Otherwise you have to ask for written permission and may have to pay royalties.
No such limits are placed on the use of the Free Bible Version. You are free to republish the whole text, complete books, or as long quotes as you wish. The only stipulation is that you identify the Free Bible Version,
any changes are identified, and derivatives are issued with the same license as the original.
So now you can use the Bible as freely as you want—producing booklets for Bible study on specific books, making the Bible available for viewing and/or download on your website, using it for personal Bible study on your phone or iPad or computer as you wish.
Let your church know. Let your minister know. And may this free version of the Bible be a blessing to all as God intended.
Yours in our gracious God,
Dr. Jonathan Gallagher, translator

We apologize for this inconvenience. Your IP address has been automatically blocked from accessing the Project Gutenberg website, www.gutenberg.org. This is because the geoIP database shows your address is in the country of Germany.

Diagnostic information:

Why did this block occur?

A Court in Germany ordered that access to certain items in the Project Gutenberg collection are blocked from Germany. Project Gutenberg believes the Court has no jurisdiction over the matter, but until the issue is resolved, it will comply.

For more information about the German court case, and the reason for blocking all of Germany rather than single items, visit PGLAF's information page about the German lawsuit.

How can I get unblocked?

All IP addresses in Germany are blocked. This block will remain in place until legal guidance changes.

If your IP address lookup is incorrect

Use the Maxmind GeoIP demo to verify status of your IP address. Project Gutenberg updates its listing of IP addresses approximately monthly.

Occasionally, the website mis-applies a block from a previous visitor. Because blocks are applied momentarily, you should try again later to visit https://www.gutenberg.org if Maxmind shows your address as being outside of Germany.

Free

If your IP address is shown by Maxmind to be outside of Germany and you were momentarily blocked, another issue is that some Web browsers erroneously cache the block. Trying a different Web browser might help. Or, clearing the history of your visits to the site.

I have other questions or need to report an error

Please email the diagnostic information above to (removing the spaces around the @) and we will try to help. The software we use sometimes flags 'false positives' -- that is, blocks that should not have occurred. Apologies if this happened, because human users outside of Germany who are making use of the eBooks or other site features should almost never be blocked.
